The Bitterness of Myra

Mitch is the storyteller, son of Myra and Matthew La Blanch, and brother of Melissa. He has never met his maternal grandfather, Moses, and he doesn’t know why his mother has isolated her family from her father and her sisters.

Despite the isolation, Melissa invites her grandad to her wedding and he accepts. At the wedding is when Mitch first witnesses his mother’s contempt of her father. Myra’s drastic actions toward him draw other members of the family closer to grandfather to protect him from his daughter’s merciless fury.

Much to his mother’s dislike and outrage, Mitch makes it a point to visit his grandad where he meets his aunts for the first time and develops a strong bond with his grandfather. Mitch’s fondness for his grandad leads him to consult with him on his thoughts, ideas, plans, and the romantic relationships he becomes involved in.

During his visits, Mitch learns about his family secrets and why his mother detests her father.

When Mitch finally meets the love of his life, Myra viciously and conspicuously bares her claws, ripping at her son’s heart.

Mitch’s father often tells Myra that she needs help. She ignores him and instead continues to bleed on everyone she encounters – until her rages go beyond what an apology can fix.
